Maybe you don't care about your possessions sparking joy and you think thanking them for a hard day's work is silly. Maybe your left-brained self would rather focus on the bottom line. Well guess what? Your clutter is costing you money and I can tell you exactly how much. Do this simple equation.
Do the math! Space is a limited resource, just like money. Now that you know what each square foot of space is costing you in actual cash, you might be feeling much more motivated to stop wasting it storing stuff you don't need.
Marie sparked this concept in my mind when in her book, The Life-Changing Magical of Tidying Up, she repeatedly mentioned "spending" your storage space. And careful spending of every resource will always mean a well managed home.
I'm in the middle of using the Konmari method to clear extra belongings out of my home with the goal of always having a well managed home.
