Here are some photos from Monday. An uncle passed away last week – within hours of a new grandchild being born. And then at the funeral, a tractor with flowers on it led the way to the cemetery. A cousin asked me to take photos of the tractor, [It’s not my usual practice to take photos at a funeral.] At the lunch, I couldn’t resist taking photos of little 5-day old Cason and his grandma!

Will be away for a few days due to a death in the family.

I saw a red bamboo bowl similar to this at World Market and fell instantly in love. I had visions of Chez Larsson’s baskets ‘n things that she keeps on hand to catch the clutter that accumulates on surfaces.
I bought the bowl and brought it home – smiling all the way.
The red bowl will begin as a place for change, keys and small items to gather on the bar separating the kitchen and living room.
It is that which is the goal of mine – to clear away the so-so items from my home, bare the surfaces, then gently place an item that I’ve fallen in love with on each surface.

Let me set the scene for you. Vegas. 3 AM. I’ve just tiptoed into the room (after loudly unlocking the door..) and found Kathy in her bed trying to wake up to ask me if we had fun. (Some of the girls and I had just seen the sights on Fremont Street and had breakfast at 2 AM.) I mumble an answer and escape to the bathroom to get ready for bed.
KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK (on the bathroom door) “Hey – sorry…but I’m having a bit of a PANIC ATTACK!!! I am really FREAKING OUT RIGHT NOW!” Kathy practically yells.
In too calm of a voice, I ask, “Umm…okay. So….is it an…….emergency, you think?”
“Hmm……I don’t kn…”
“Okay then. I’ll just wash my face and get dressed…then I’ll be out to help you.”
Friend of the Year, indeed! Where do I pick up my award?

Hungry, I stroll into my [male] office-neighbor's office, and ask, "What's for dinner?"
"I don't know……shrimp!!"
{making a face} "Oh."
"What? You don't EAT shrimp???"
"Um…uh…no…I uh… don't like eating food where I can picture the live animal or insect. Beef and chicken I've tried to distance the thought of what I'm eating but have yet to try something like rabbit, turtle or SHRIMP because I just picture the live animal or insect."
"What? So would you eat a carrot? A worm has probably crawled all over it….."
"and violated it, I know.."
"VIOLATED IT? I wouldn't go there.", shaking his head as if I were crazy.
Time for a change of topic. "Ooohhh..carrots. Have you heard of Demetri Martin? He has a funny bit about when fruits and veggies were named. An orange* was named an orange for its color. Then they got to carrots and were stumped. 'Umm…long pointies??!'"
"Ha ha." (polite laugh)
"Aaaand he does a bit about…"
"What about grapes**? It's not called a Purple? And bananas? It's not called a Yellow, is it???"
(sigh) "You're right! The orange is unique.", leaving his office, still hungry, but not for carrots or shrimp.

*"They obviously named oranges before carrots: 'What are those?' 'Oranges' 'Then what are THESE?' 'Long pointies…..crap'"
**Demetri Martin: My favorite fruit is grapes. Because with grapes, you always get another chance. 'Cause, you know, if you have a crappy apple or a peach, you're stuck with that crappy piece of fruit. But if you have a crappy grape, no problem – just move on to the next. 'Grapes: The Fruit of Hope.'

I’m not usually a fan of dark wall color but here it looks amazing! I love the clean lines with the white bench and the canvases. The photographer created the artwork and provides details on the flickr page comment section. (Click the photo to follow the link.)
CANVASES! I keep meaning to buy some canvases to have on hand when friends visit. The goal is for each friend to create a piece of original artwork by painting a canvas. I’ll then line the stairs inside my front door (that lead up to my apartment via the dining room) with original art! Great idea! I need to follow through with it.

I have a closet that is more the size of a storeroom. So I filled it with “stuff”. Everyday I think I should just donate everything I don’t use daily/monthly to the thrift store, and everyday I think “But I don’t know when they take donations!”
After months of this, I just called the store. I can take items 8-5 weekdays and 10-4 on saturdays. Now I have no excuse. (And that phone call took 60 seconds tops.)
Thinking too much often renders me paralyzed. Anyone else go through this?

LIBRARY ELF
REASONS WHY I LOVE THIS NEWLY DISCOVERED SITE
1. It accessed my library account for me.
2. Elf will email me when books on hold are ready, when books are due back at the library (1 day or a week before they're due), and when books are overdue.
3. It ranks the books I put a hold on – in order of my place in line – from 1st in line down to 110th in line!
4. My library is a pain in the butt to access – logging me out after every check of my account, etc. This site will show me everything at one glance.
5. It's streamlined a system my library has made complicated.Plus it's just a cool thing. I am impressed and it's only been an hour since I signed up.

I feel like my little three year old niece announcing "Here I am!!!" Life/work/church has been so crazy, haven't blogged much. Thus this lovely Monday morning update.
How about some random thoughts to start the week?!
- Saw the doc today for the third time in six weeks…about a cough (darn it all….reminds me of the movie "About a Boy" – and how Hugh Grants narrates the drive to the hospital while following the ambulance in his sports car…and saying how awful but how fabulous it is. RANDOM, I'm telling ya!) -OH YEAH – and the doc finally announces it's bronchitis and that I should be on antiobiotics. *big sigh* finally. I'm sure my neighbors are not enjoying my having the window open at night on warm nights – and coughing – thus hindering their sleep.
- Took a nephew, Taylor, to see "Get Smart" yesterday. Laughed more than a few times but felt it resembled a TV show more than a movie. WAIT..it's based on a television show. no wonder! Speaking of laughing….was glad to be sitting near a guy who laughed at the same time my nephew and I did…… getting the same jokes. unless he didn't get any joke and just nervously laughed when we laughed. whichever – he made it more fun.
- Went to my grandfather's 90th birthday lunch on Saturday and as we all greeted him with "Happy Birthday!!!!" he'd reply with "Same to you!!" – which only really applied to me since my birthday is a week before his.
- On the hour-long trip home (turned into two hours due to construction/flooding/repair work), my niece (age 3) asked, "What……is……going…..ON?????" very deliberately and in a concerned manner as if we were deliberately keeping Her Highness from a very important engagement and we should take care of the trivial matter of a traffic jam so that we could arrive at Grandma's house to play school and eat watermelon right on schedule.
- Great sermon at church on Sunday. The Youth Guy continued a series on playing cards..with a message called "Spoons"…. addressing the idea that sometimes we get so caught up with having our cards in order (our lives in order, having a church that is a safe place to be around where we can learn about raising families and living good lives – for example) that we forget about the spoons (the needs of the world: enough drinking water, the Gospel given to those who've never heard it, children living in poverty and/or working as slaves). We were given plastic spoons with our bulletins and I should have counted the number of spoons that fell to the floor during the message or when we were to bow our heads to pray!
- Had a bit of a girls night with a friend – dinner and a movie. Fun.
- Posted a reply on Ragamuffin Soul and am enjoying the other comments. There are some witty people out there! Be my friends….please? (to add to the witty people I already know, of course!!) (did I cover my you-know-what there???)
