  • I have been reading the book Style Statement by Carrie McCarthy & Danielle LaPorte.  [It’s a pretty book even if one doesn’t want to find out what their style statement is.] Skimmed the profiles of interviewees while waiting to meet a friend last night and was struck by one description in particular:

simply: Clean, pared down, balanced.   Basic, organic.   Fundamental.  Austere, plain.  Open spaces.  Well organized.  Tidy.  Can range from ultramodern and stark to sheer elegance.  Never ostentatious or showy.

Realized today I’d done that with my wardrobe.  I have been happily mixing and matching the following "uniform" pieces for two weeks:

    • sky blue cardigan
    • black cardigan
    • black linen dress with ruffle on the bottom
    • black/sky blue dress
    • black linen skirt
    • grey a-line skirt
    • white 3/4 length shirt/blouse
    • matching black 3/4 length shirt/blouse
    • sky blue 3/4 length cotton shirt/blouse
    • black tees
    • white tees
    • (2) pair of black pants – capri length (which on me is just above my ankles)
    • variety of black shoes (danskos, sketcher mary janes, flats)

I wear the simple clothing then add a pretty barrette or ring.  (Need to start buying some necklaces and bracelets that I love and will happily wear.)

What Style Statement encourages is to find out who you are and incorporate it 100% of the time: relationships, belongings, home, finances, work, etc.

After reading the Simply section, I did some clearing off of countertops and tables at home, and found I could breathe much easier after it was done.  Smiled more this morning when I caught glimpses of the bare surfaces.

Here are some of the pages that were inspirational to me. (click on image for larger view)  I like that the person interviewed defined simply as:  Capturing the essense of somebody or something in a way that is easy, a way that flows, a way that is true.

Only one more youth service remains until a summer break. So one of my [junior high] girls and I took a lot of photos yesterday. Loving the way grace and seth got all dressed up for their mom on Mothers Day!

  • it’s 8:48 PM on Sunday night. I’m about to climb into bed with three books:  the Message Remix (Bible), Blue Like Jazz, and a mystery (one of the Jane Whitefield series).  I twittered this but it feels positively decadent to be able to read and go to sleep so early.

Today was the next-to-last youth service  for this school year, and Bryan taught an excellent message.  Can’t wait to discuss it with the junior high girls on Wednesday night.

Here’s my Friday night.  The Family Force 5/The Wedding/Children 18:3 concert at church for 800 kids and adults who came from four states for the event… and it had a mosh pit.  I smiled through the entire night with the help of some good earplugs.  Good thing my hearing test was LAST week…. 48 hours after the concert and my ears are still ringing a bit.

    Here are Friday photos.

If you look at the top right corner of this photo, there’s a guy Elena and I called Skull Shirt Guy.  I commented on his shirt…and he began a long story about liking the music of Hank Williams Jr. the Third’s music…that his best CD is "Straight to Hell"…but has some good lyrics (and a lot he can’t repeat).  Then we heard how Skull Shirt Guy writes country gospel songs.  Then he finished his work of loading the equipment into the truck…and we never saw him again.  The End.

aha! a floral theme. seem to be craving that now that spring has definitely arrived in wisconsin. time to do some spring cleaning, airing out, getting rid of everything I haven’t used or needed since moving in last spring.  there’s just something about the seasons changing that makes little changes at home and in the wardrobe just that much more special.  so that at the end of the day you can sit back, relax and enjoy the refreshing newness.

    Photos from here.

  • Late last night, I get these Twitter updates almost simultaneously on my phone:

    Maggie Mason

Maggie Tasting menu at the new neighborhood dessert bar. Stranger next to us just said, "Hold on, I’m Twittering." 33 minutes ago from txt

Shroni Shroni Hitting up newest local bar–wine and dessert lounge. wayyy too good. 36 minutes ago from txt

Sharona (Shroni) follows Maggie’s updates on Twitter, but Maggie does not know Sharona.

I text Sharona that Maggie from Twitter just twittered about her…

ShroniShroni So MAYBE i went back to find maggie…YOU DONT KNOW ME!

Maggie Mason Maggie Holy s&%*. Small city. Turns out Sherona was the stranger who was Twittering. Sherona is the nicest "stalker" in town.

So two strangers at a bar use Twitter. Across the country, a girl gets the updates and connects the other two.  Teeny, tiny world.  Gotta love twitter, texting and fun friends who don’t mind stalking a Twitter celebrity!

I love empty spaces. soothing to look at.

then again. it’s almost 10 PM Wednesday night and am about to fall over in my chair. need to crawl into bed.

have been sleep deprived for a month since I started taking a medication that I thought made me sleepy. so I took it at night. thus began a month of waking up every two hours at night and not easily falling back asleep because the medicine was keeping me alert.

after a month of this… it hit me. take the medicine in the morning. tried that on sunday..and slept solidly the past two nights. am finally going to get over the sleep deprivation. WOO HOO.

so I’m too tired to be ecstatic about being genuinely sleepy..but trust me. am doing the happy dance inside me.

now if you’ll exuse me, I have some snorin’ to do..I mean dreaming.

    nighty night.
